Hot Jams of the Day: Doss, “The Way I Feel” Remixes

Doss
“The Way I Feel” Remixes
The Way I Feel Remix EP (out soon on Acéphale)

I’ve spent the last few days on a relaxing California vacation, and the shadowy Acéphale signee’s excellent debut EP has been one key cogs of its soundtrack. The summer vibes look set to continue in the form of a much appreciated remix album, and its first two efforts nail the ephemeral, shape-shifting spirit of the majestic original. Fresh off one of the debuts of the year, London’s Ana Caprix puts a decidedly Balearic, beach-y spin on the cut. PC Music stalwart, Life Sim, focuses more on the dancefloor, weaving a 90’s trance vibe that wouldn’t sound out of place on the Go Soundtrack.

Hot Jam of the Day: Lana Del Rey, “Shades of Cool”

Lana Del Rey
“Shades of Cool”
Ultraviolence (out 06.13 on Interscope)

I wasn’t quite prepared to say it after last month’s sweeping, “West Coast,” but Ms. Lana has officially well and truly got her mawfuckin’ groove back. Seemingly doomed to be pop music’s Lindsey Lohan (a few great early moments followed by years of mediocrity and trainwreck), the 27 year-old seems to have re-discovered the starry-eyed nostalgia and drama that made us fall in love with her in the first place. Simply put, “Shades of Cool” is the best thing she’s released since her stunning debut singles “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans.” Built around a romantic, Bond-ian string arraignment, the New York native turns in a stunning vocal performance. There’s real heart here — real pain in those mellifluous pipes. An artist this dramatic only really works if you feel it, and I am more than feeling it. Great to have you back, Lana.

Hot Jam of the Day: Jacques Greene, “No Excuse” (Fort Romeau Remix)

Jacques Greene
“No Excuse” (Fort Romeau Remix)
Phantom Vibrate Remixes EP (out May 30 on LuckyMe)

Jacques Greene’s outstanding, Phantom Vibrate, has been heavy rotation since in dropped last month, and now it is getting the full remix treatment. Yung Gud’s delicious “No Excuse” remix has been floating around for a while, but this sweltering, monolithic re-work from London stalwart Fort Romeau is our first official taste of the EP. Romeau (né Michael Greene, no relation) expertly builds an arid, ephemeral arraignment around the original’s floaty vocal sample. The busy steel drums are a lovely touch to the album’s undulating synths, giving the evocative original a decidedly dancefloor-focused feel.

Hot Jam of the Day: Tinashe, “Days in the West”

The rising LA-based vocalist adds some welcome bite to Drake’s recent single “Days in the East.” Somebody must have rubbed the 21 year-old the wrong way, because she comes out swinging here. Taking on critics, haters, and the industry at large, Tinashe pulls no punches, seductively expressing her frustrations with lines like “I’m tired of you not doing your research, look me up.” As fraught as she seems, her elastic, gorgeous vocals help her rise above it, guaranteeing that she doesn’t come off as another angry, petulant young artist. They might not know yet, but they will soon.

Hot Jam of the Day: Lido, “Money”

Lido
“Money”
I Love You (out June 9 on Pelican Fly)

After a string of devastating remixes, the shadowy Norwegian producer finally unleashes his proper debut single: a frenetic, maximalist juggernaut. The young producer is fashioning out a tasty niche for himself, living somewhere between jersey club and electro with a little dash of hip-hop. Unlike a lot of the Soundcloud riff raff, Lido’s tracks are crafted for the club, not your dorm room, and I have no doubt that “Money” will be melting faces across the country all summer. All hail!

Hot Jam of the Day: CFCF, “Windswept”

CFCF
“Windswept”
Outsiders EP (out May 20 on Dummy/Paper Bag)

Montreal-based musician, Michael Silver, has really been the gift that’s kept on giving in recent years. In 2013, he put out two exquisite releases — the instrumental, Sakamoto-inspired Music for Objects and the gorgeous Outside — and he is showing no signs of slowing down. Far from just a box-standard remix LP, Outsiders features six tracks, four of which are re-imagined Outside cuts. One of those new ones, the aptly-titled “Windswept,” is a delicate, bewitching number that pits his hushed, evocative vocals over a delicious new-age arraignment. Like much of his best work, you can hear the track breathe, and it billows seductively into a deftly devastating resolution.

Hot Jam of the Day: Lil Durk x Young Thug, “Let’s Throw a Party”

Lil Durk
“Let’s Throw a Party” (f/ Young Thug)
Upcoming LP on Def Jam / Coke Boys

The two best young rappers in the game + one of the best three young producers (Young Chop) = MUTH. ER. FUH. KING. GOLD.

Let’s break it down. First off, Thug’s vocal melodies and cadences are off the fucking charts. Dude is one of the most innovative, versatile voices we’ve heard in a very, very long time. Durk continues to show a keen ear for melody and one of the smoothest flows on the planet. It’s all held together by a twinkling Young Chop banger. It’s been magnificent to watch the young Chicago native develop his sound from the nihilistic boom of drill to the harmonically developed, multi-faceted portfolio he’s cultimating. Simply put, this is the sound of three very talented young artists, who are (hopefully) just about to enter their prime.

Hot Jam of the Day: Lipgloss Twins, “Wannabe”

Lipgloss Twins
“Wannabe”
Digital Single (PC Music)

The tricksters at PC Music are at it again, releasing another bonkers slab of pop deconstructionism. “Wannabe” sounds like it comes from a supremely warped, over saturated mind, a sonic rendering of our lightning-paced, hyper-stimulated digital culture. Every time you think you get a feel for what one of their tracks will do, it zigs violently in the other direction. “Wannabe” is an exhilarating amalgam of of vaporwave, dance pop, hardcore, future bass, and about a thousand other things, and incredibly, all of these disparate elements form a cohesive, digestible whole. When it resolves into its exhilarating climax, you’ll be left dumbfounded at how you got that far in just two minutes.

Hot Jam of the Day: Frankey & Sandrino, “Save”

Frankey & Sandrino
“Save”
Save EP (out now on Innervisions)

The German house producers take aim for the heart on this expansive, engulfing electro jam. The veteran duo match a pounding backbeat with spacey synths that gently envelop the listener, never losing that essential balance between light and dark. It’s one of those tracks that you can feel the sweat pouring off; it’s one of those tracks where you can feel the sweltering, muggy air in your lungs. That transportive quality is an ever-present in the best dance tracks, and “Save” effortlessly coaxes your mind toward the dancefloor, no matter where your body is.

You might think that Chief Keef’s 15 minutes are up. You might think that the crown prince of Chicago’s troubled drill scene was a flash in the pan, a sad indictment of a hip-hop world that has lost its way. You might think that he’s a no-talent charlatan, riding a superficial wave of tabloid buzz and a vulgar public persona to the lowest common denominator of fame. You might think he’s an idiot, a thug, a hopeless case, just killing time before he recedes back into the shadowy part of America you prefer to imagine does not exist. If you think all these things, you might post about them on the Internet. A lot.

Well, you might be wrong. He just might be a relentlessly experimental young artist who adheres to none of the Empire’s preconceptions of what a rapper is supposed to be. He just might be a sonically fearless musician, obsessed with crafting music that he wants to hear, not what A&R wants you to hear. He just might be a refreshingly free artist, a welcome foil to the thousands of overly self-aware young acts focused on building an easily digestible brand, not taking risks. And if you listen hard enough, he just might offer some pretty fascinating insight into being young, on your own, and engulfed by an impossibly bright spotlight.

More than anything, he just might not give even one single, solitary fuck what any of you think. And that’s why he still matters.
